I feel like I should know specifically where that is, but I’m drawing a blank...

It's not in PA. We went to a wedding in Asheville NC over Christmas. If you take I-81 all the way to Tennessee and then head south on I-26, you'll cross these mountains before you get into NC.

Ah, I should have figured... the road looks too nice to be northern PA!

I-26 is such a better way to cross from I-81 to Asheville than I-40. It’s newer (I imagine the route was considered too steep initially), has much nicer views, and is more pleasant overall. I-40 is narrow, with no median, no left shoulder, and just a concrete divider, with a bunch of twists that are too tight for an interstate, but not tight enough to make for fun driving, lots of truck traffic, and it’s buried down in a valley, so you don’t even get much of a view.

I haven’t ever tried the I-40 route, as that seems to be a much longer way to get there too.

I-26 is definitely a nice route if your vehicle can handle the mountains. We had snow coming down on our drive there which made things much more interesting. You can still see a coating of snow on top of the mountains (this one was in NC)
